BEAUTY, New Mexico

beautyBeauty was found out in Lea County huddled and shaking with fear in a dirt dug out and covered in dirt and ticks. I couldn't bare to think of sending this dog obviously scared of people to the pound only to face a certain euthanasia. After she was given a bath, her personality and looks transformed into her namesake! A real Beauty she is completely grateful for her second chance!

Beauty has probably lived a life of abuse. She cowers to unfamiliar touch and lays flat on the floor if she thinks she has done something REALLY bad. She is a little shy at first but she just needs to be reassured that everyone doesn't kick, punch, or slap to get what they want from her.

What a wonderful family pet Beauty would make! She is great with small children and other dogs. Cats are probably going to be a problem for her but with patience and some training, she could be adapted to live with cats.

She is a natural heeler and will follow you off-leash. She has not had any accidents in the house but we are still crate training her to be on the safe side and to make her the most adoptable as an inside, family pet. She is about 1-2 years old and is a mix of Siberian Husky/Lab/Pit bull. She is very calm and doesn't jump up on you but when you want to play with her, she does know how to have a good time! She is a true 'Scuttle-butter' and 'butt wiggler.'

She is spayed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped and is ready for her happily ever after! Please contact Amanda Green at ddbnewmexico@yahoo.com or call (575) 392-3458.

BUTTER'S' Story

UPDATE 5/30/09: Butter has finished first in his class at Frogs 2 Dogs (with a class of 8 other male dogs!) * He has been through protocols to eliminate his biting for resource guarding * He will be the perfect dog for someone who knows how to handle dogs.

Butter1Looking for a jogging partner who won't wear you out? Try Butters! He makes going for walks as much fun for humans as for himself. Show off your new fully trained Butters to the amazement and envy of all passersby.

Butters was in trouble with the law but now he's come clean and just needs another chance. He was adopted as a tiny puppy by a nice family. Instead of living inside his new home, he was tied out in the backyard. A growing number of communities have outlawed this practice of chaining dogs outside their entire lives. However, there are still people who believe dogs belong outside.

Unfortunately for Butters, his new family was very old school. They didn’t believe in neutering him, either. Very much like his namesake on South Park, poor Butters couldn’t catch a break. He spent over 8 years tied outside. At first the children came out to play with him. As his frustration and loneliness grew, he would strain at his chain and jump up on anyone who came close enough to touch. There is a patch of skin on his neck that was injured by his collar. His “mane” covered it and no one even noticed it until recently. Fur is not growing there. It might be a permanent scar, a lifelong reminder of the quiet pain and suffering he endured on the chain. But you have to look under his fur to find it.

Butter2One day he slipped out of his collar and ran out of his yard, free at last. He ran into a lady and when she tried to stop him with her arm, he bit her. He was taken away and put in quarantine to make sure he didn’t have rabies. The lady he bit was fine, but dog bites are taken very seriously especially when they are reported to the authorities.

His family didn’t want him back when his quarantine was finished. They said to “put him down.” However, some volunteers who had known Butters thought he deserved a chance, so they contacted Dogs Deserve Better.

We sent him to the Atlanta Dog Whisperer for evaluation. He passed with flying colors. Butters is a happy boy, always smiling and curious about his surroundings. We think he’s part Golden Retriever because of his coat and color. And he might have some German Shepherd, too. Personality-wise, he is very Akita-like in his quiet reserve. He’s smart (he learned to SIT and TURNAROUND in just a few minutes). When I ask him to sit, he’ll sit until I release him or until he finds something else to do. Otherwise, he’ll remain sitting. He has learned LEAVE IT, FOCUS, LIE DOWN, and SHAKE. We're starting obedience training with Frogs2Dogs in March.

Because he was unaltered (not neutered) and chained for 8+ years, once he was free all he wanted to do was walk, sniff and mark. It took a while to figure out if any kind of treats would motivate him. He also didn’t know what to do with toys (once he sniffed them and marked them).

Now he’s completely healthy, in mind and body, and ready for a new family who can give Butters what his other family neglected to do: security, leadership, love, guidance, training and a good second-half to his life. He's calm and quiet (only barks when absolutely necessary) and enjoys naps. His favorite thing is walking, maybe because he was chained for his entire life; he has a lot of walking to do to make up for his chained past. He enjoys walking with a human or on his own, on leash or off leash. He smiles while he walks and it just brings joy to my heart knowing he's no longer living on a chain.

Butters loves female dogs but so far he hasn’t been able to tolerate male dogs off leash. He was good with the children in his family but has not been tested with children now, nor has he been tested with cats. The wound next to his right eye is starting to fade (probably the result of a loose dog attacking him while he was chained, another reason to ban that means of restraint). He’s discovered how to PLAY and will fetch a tennis ball.

His rehabilitation at US Canine ended in early February and we’re looking for a foster family or a new home for Butterboy. He walks extremely well on leash without pulling. He loves rides in the car. He has a totally clean bill of health and he’s microchipped and crate trained. He weighs 60 pounds, is on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

I HAVE TOTALLY FALLEN IN LOVE WITH BUTTERS. ONCE I WAS CONFIDENT THAT HE TRUSTED ME COMPLETELY AND RESPECTED MY LEADERSHIP ROLE, I LET HIM EARN SOME FREEDOMS. I NOW INVITE HIM TO SLEEP ON THE BED WITH ME (INVITATION ONLY AND IF HE HOPS UP WITHOUT AN INVITATION, HE MUST GET BACK DOWN). FOR REWARDS, I USE A COMBINATION OF YUMMY TREATS (CHICKEN, CHEESE, ETC.), A REWARD MARKER (THE WORD YES), TOYS, AFFECTION AND ADDITIONAL FREEDOMS. I HAVE CONTINUED HIS US CANINE PACK TRAINING WITH LONG LEASH WALKS, BY MY SIDE, SUBMISSIVE AND CALM, EVERY MORNING AND EVERY EVENING. HE KNOWS TO LET ME ENTER DOORWAYS FIRST. HE’S COMPLETELY HOUSETRAINED AND DOESN’T MARK VERY MUCH ANY MORE, AND NEVER IN THE HOUSE. BUTTERS IS A WONDERFUL DOG. IF I DIDN’T ALREADY HAVE 4 DOGS, I’D ADOPT HIM MYSELF IN A HEARTBEAT. HIS NEW FAMILY WILL NEED TO PROCEED SLOWLY, AS I DID, AND ESTABLISH TRUST AND LEADERSHIP BONDS SO THAT HE KNOWS WHAT IS EXPECTED OF HIM AND CAN FURTHER BLOSSOM INTO THE BEAUTIFUL COMPANION HE WAS MEANT TO BE.

Please contact Pam Cheatham at pam.cheatham@turner.com for an application or for more information on Butters.

ROCKEFELLER, Illinois

RockefellerRockefeller was rescued after living all of his 7 years on a chain (click here to see where he used to live). At first he was very nervous about everything relating to living indoors since it was all very new to him. However, he is now learning what it is like to be an indoor dog... loved, kept warm, given lots of attention... and he loves it. Watch videos.

He is a true mix breed of who-knows-what. His mom was an all black mix breed with very long hair and his dad was unknown.

Rockefeller afterUPDATE: 3/7/2009
Rockefeller's foster home reports that he is being a very good boy and is very food motivated. His favorite treat is chicken strips or cheese. He loves sleeping by your bed at night, but is also very good in his crate. He has learned "Sit" and is ready to further his education. He is also progressing well on his housebreaking. He is being crate trained and is perfect in his crate over night. He can only go about 5 hours in his crate during the day so if his new family works all day, they will need to be able to come home for lunch or hire someone to let him out in the middle of the day especially in the beginning since this is all very new to him.

DAISY MAY, Illinois

DaisyDaisy May is a purebred American Eskimo who was rescued after a life lived tied outside to a stump. She is now ready to make up for lost time and find a family who can give her the love and care she deserves.

UPDATE 3/16/2009
Daisy May got pampered today. She had a nice grooming and now feels "fresh as a daisy" for the first time in a LONG time!

UPDATE 3/30/09 We are getting to know Daisy better and think she would prefer to be an only dog and no cats please. Daisy is very affectionate once she gets to know you and is very loving and loyal. We'd like a family for her that would take her for nice long walks. She would need to be groomed every two-three months by a professional groomer or by someone who knows how to groom.

The first step to adopting Daisy May is to fill out a Pet Adoption Application. Learn more about our Adoption Process. The adoption donation for Daisy May is $300. For details about our adoption donation, read The Cost of Adoption.

CINDY, Texas

CindyCindy was left outside tied to a tree with her puppies and two other dogs. Family evacuated right before Ike without even bothering to leave food or water for them or even releasing them from their shekels so they could make it on their own.

We received a call 5 days after Ike about injured and starving dogs and puppies. When we got to the scene it was heart breaking. Tree had fallen and injured the adult dogs. Puppies some how survived. All out in the open. They did not have any food or water for at least 5 days or may be more.

Their eyes begged for help. When we  got  near they wagged their tails, tried to drag their injured bodies towards us but were too weak. When we scooped them in our arms to carry them to the car they all just put their heads on our shoulders and let us.

Cindy is a sweetest thing. Her body tells the story of Puppy Mill Mom. We think she may be 3 or 4 years old and has already spent most of her life breeding puppies tied to a tree. We don't even want to think where all those puppy wound up. We are glad we are able to save her and her puppies this time.  She will never give birth to another litter ever again. She was emaciated, starving and thirsty when we picked her up. She did not resist. As we picked her in our arms she just put her head on our shoulder. We knew we have a lover in our hands. She was light heartworm positive. We had to wait for her to gain weight as she came to us skin and bones. Lack of food and nursing babies was a double whammy for her. We got her all fatten up and fixed and now she is getting her heartworm treatment. She is a great mom. Even after starvation she let her puppies eat before her. She stopped eating when ever her puppy demanded nursing. She would nurse them first and then finish her food. She is Mom of the year. Lucky for her all of them are weaned off.

After all that she has gone through she is still so loving to humans. She loves to put her arms on my shoulders and give me hugs and kisses. If you are looking for a lover who deserves to be pampered and loved here is your chance. She gets along with some of the dogs but not all. We think she needs to go to a home where she can be the only child and pampered to the fullest to make up for all the hardship she had to endure.

She loves stuffed toys and want to play fetch. Her favorite thing is to roll in the grass when sun is shining above.

BUDDY, Texas

BuddyBuddy our cute stubby leg guy was left outside tied to a tree with another dog and mama with puppies.

Neighbors told us that both adult males were used for breeding and had spent most of their life tied to a tree. Most of the time without food or water in middle of summer. Both were hurt from a fallen tree. Scars on their bodies tell the story of life of neglect and abuse. They love being hugged and kissed. They love humans - adults and kid and all they want is lot of love and attention. If you move too quickly or raise your hands or have something in your hand they instantly get scared and become submissive indicating they have been abused or beaten by humans before. But still they are ready to trust and love again.

As Buddy has spent most of his life tied to a tree he does not have social skills to live with another dog. Though he is good with the puppies he has issues with other adults. He is ok with some females but not others. Humans – he loves them. We would like him to be the only dog in the house. Please stop his suffering and adopt him.

BRAD, Texas

BradHi! My name is Brad. I may be 1-2 yrs old.

Sometimes my foster mom calls me Brat. I am little spoiled. But I deserve it. Do you see my limp? I have been through some rough times and everyone deserves a pampering. Somehow I ended up at the city pound with broken leg. Waited for days but no one would help me or get me medical attention. They kept saying it’s a pound and they don’t treat injured animals. They said my humans have to come and pick me up otherwise they would put me down as I couldn’t be adopted with my broken leg. I kept putting my broken leg out of my cage showing it to anyone and everyone. And finally one volunteer called my foster mom.

My foster mom rescued me and rushed me to the vet. They did X-rays and found out that my broken leg had already started to fuse. Vet said he would have to break it again to fix it and that I would be in lot of pain. Everyone decided that I have suffered enough so they braced my leg and put me on pain killers. My leg is healing nice and I play with all my foster siblings. I can run really fast but the my leg starts to hurt again. Its not fully healed yet but is almost there.

I just want o be around people. I love kids. They are so much fun to play with. It will be so cool if I can get human kid of my own to play with. Or doggy siblings. I am still young and have lots of energy to spend. And being a Basenji you know I am going to be a hand full
.
If you are up to it lets see if it can work out between me and you. I will do anything for the treat.

FLUFFY, South Carolina

Fluffy This is Fluffy & his story. Fluffy- "I live in Winnsboro,SC/ Fairfield County."

Weight: 30-35 lbs. Will be going to the vet shortly. No aggression issues. Does not seem to be phased by cats.

Hi, I'm Fluffy & as you can tell I'm not Fluffy anymore. I don't have much hair left but even so I am still a happy dog. I am owned by an elderly man who was made to be my owner by a woman who was caring for him-- he never wanted me but is kind to me/ we use to sit together in the evenings-- 2 lonely souls. She told him if he lived in her trailer he had to be my owner as she needed someone to take me as she had too many dogs & was getting in trouble for the number of dogs she had.

She was made guardian over this old man & controlled his money/ she was better to me than to him. All went ok for me as long as the woman was alive but she died w/ cancer about 2 yrs ago & this is when I started going down.

The woman's son left it up to some of his workers to feed me as the old man was not really able to do so. They did not feed me & I almost starved to death; my heartworm medicine ceased as did my flea/ tick medication. The old man would share his canned spaghetti w/ me. I needed dog food to keep my coat healthy & to keep weight on me. The old man had no money nor way to get food for me nor the other things I needed.

The nice lady who is writing this asking for help keeps tons of food in a dog house for me so I'm eating better now & she has been bathing me & putting on flea medication. I am getting better & much of my hair has grown back-- hard to believe that, right!?.

NOW, I hear that my old master is going to a nursing home and the lady writing this is trying to find me somewhere to live!!!! My life has not been good for a long time & I am scared!!! Really I have never had anyone who wanted & loved me and I am such a nice guy who use to be a VERY HANDSOME FELLOW --if I must say so myself! bragging on myself"!

I love to run and play and the lady says I have a running gait like a butterfly!!! (They are pretty u know!) -- Anyway, I need a home or a rescue to take me before the old man has to go away as I heard the son say he'd just have to drop me at the shelter which I have heard the lady say is a kill shelter. I overheard the lady say to someone who came to help her w/ my dog house that I will not make it a day in that shelter as it is a HIGH KILL & a dog looking like me will go to the Rainbow Bridge immediately!

I am not ready to die yet as I would love to have someone to love & laugh w/ me! --
I DON'T HAVE A HOME -- PLEASE HELP ME!

SAMMY, Indiana

Click here to see more pictures of SammySammy has been on a chain since he was about 3 months old and he is now a year old.

His family finally decided that he should be an indoor dog to a loving home. His ears are bitten pretty bad from all the flies, but we're getting them healed. His first day at his foster home consisted of him running in their large back yard until it was bed time. He was so excited to be free and have other four legged friends to play with. They have a kiddie pool too and he loves to submerge himself in it. He has been running around and enjoying his freedom so much, that his foster mom can't even get a picture of him. She wishes she could because the smile on his face makes her giggle. The picture posted is of him while he was chained to his pen. He has been neutered, vaccinated, had his stool tested for intestinal parasites and had a heart worm test. The stool sample and heart worm test both came back negative. Sammy is ready for his forever home!

If you have room in your home and in your heart for Sammy, contact: ddbrepcoord@dogsdeservebetter.org

AMAZING GRACE, Indiana

graceRESCUED APRIL '08 Hi! I'm Grace. I am a Huggle ! Husky/Beagle mix. Don't you just love my beautiful blue eyes ? I was left outside, chained and alone unsupervised. I was visited by a handsome guy and we made 7 puppies. I was left out there, chained in the cold with my puppies and most of them succumbed to the frigid weather. My human left me with a family member, separating me from my 2 babies. She had no room for me so she called Dogs Deserve Better. After a couple of pho9e calls they found my pups and we were reunited, YAY !!! I'm a very good Mommy and I loved taking care of my babies, but they're adopted out and I'm alone. I know I am not a puppy - but I am a sweetie pie who needs some love and a home where I can live inside and be adored for the beautiful lady I am. I am 1 1/2 years old, up to date on vaccines, and on heartworm preventative and I'm spayed. I love my tennis ball and I'm learning to walk like a lady on a leash.

JUNE, Indiana

juneJune is a one year old lab/terrier mix. She was chained outside for all of her puppy-hood until being surrendered to a southern Indiana shelter. The shelter then relinquished June to Dogs Deserve Better. June arrived with a terrible leg injury which required her left front leg to be amputated. She has since recovered completely and does not require any further medical treatment for her leg. She can still run like the wind on 3 legs. June has been spayed and is up to date on vaccines. She is also on heart worm preventative and flea & tick preventative. June does very well with cats and will need to be properly introduced to other dogs. She also prefers older children who understand how to play with a dog. June's ideal forever family is one that can devote all of their time, love, and energy to her. June is a happy-go-lucky kind of gal and loves belly rubs. She loves to play in the yard and lounge with you on the couch.

If you are interested in meeting June please contact:
chjaynes@yahoo.com, or fill out our adoption application.

LITTLE MAN , Kentucky

Little Man Needs You - Little Man is living on a chain in the county and his people want us to find him a home. Little Man was purchased by his caretaker in Arkansas when he was 8 weeks old under the assumption that he is a Feist/American Bulldog mix. We think he was probably bamboozled; nevertheless, he is a sweet dog who deserves a better life. He is now about 7 months old, good with other dogs, cats, and kids according to the owner. He loves to play. Would you want to help get this sweet dog off the chain and into a home?

Please contact: dwhite@aggressiveonline.net.

ROSIE, Ohio

Hi. My name is Rosie. I am a 5 year old Border Collie/Lab mix who is really glad that Dogs Deserve Better people found me! Until they did, I was living with Buddy (above), my Rotteweiler/Lab companion, who was chained to a garage in our backyard. I ran, but, even though I was not the one on the chain, nothing made any sense to me. The human who promised to take care of us soon forgot we were there. I spent most of my time being lonely, thirsty, hungry and really afraid. My tongue was so chapped that my rescuers cringed every time they saw me.Deprived of fresh water and nutrition, starved for human companionship and physically abused, I became neurotic and developed fear aggression behavior. But, this summer, Dogs Deserve Better volunteers found me and Buddy, and, after several months, they were able to rescue BOTH OF US! Although I am still a little hesitant around strangers, my foster dad has worked hard to socialize me, so most of my fear has gone away. Thanks to the donations of some generous people, we both went to the vet and got treated for heartworm. I am also spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations. Now, though, he needs to help other dogs whose humans do not take care of them, so he needs me to find my permanent human companion(s). I am house-trained, heal automatically and am happy to share the couch with you or lie in a favorite spot, usually behind or under something. Rosie shares her foster home with 5 other dogs, a kitten, a cat and 2 fish.

Beau, Salem, Oregon

Except for a couple of months, Beau, a pitbull mix, lived his life at the end of a chain. Lucky for him, his owner finally did the right thing and surrendered him to Dogs Deserve Better. Beau has come a long way in a short amount of time. He was a little nervous around new people at first, but each day as he gains confidence, his sweet personality comes out. This 3 1/2 year old weighs 70 lbs and still thinks he is a puppy. He loves playing and running with the other dogs, and doesn't mind being low man on the totem pole. One of his favorite things to do is to lay on his dog bed and play with a chew toy, both of which he has never had. He is not food or toy aggressive. He tolerates his baths very well and likes going for rides in the car. He now knows a few commands and walks pretty good on a leash. A home without cats would be best. He has been neutered and is UTD on shots. His foster mom will also assist with transport if needed. If you have any questions about this very special rescue or would like to meet Beau, please email Ruth at rjainor@msn.com or call 503-881-6055.
